The
Sports Foundation will hold its 40th Anniversary
Celebration Gala with an all-star event on
Thursday, June 11, at the Villa Barone Manor,
Bronx, NY, beginning at 6:00 p.m. with a
reception and dinner at 7:30 p.m.
Being
honored this year are Malcolm A. Smith, Majority
Leader-President Pro Tem New York State Senate;
Carl Heastie New York State Assemblyman.
Chairman Bronx County Democratic Committee;
Dominic Carter, NY 1 News Reporter; Cheryl
Simmons-Oliver, District Director, Office of
Congressman Serrano; Leon Eastman, President,
A.L. Eastman & Sons; Dan Boucher, President &
CEO, Winston Salem Industries for the Blind; and
Ruth Lovelace, head basketball coach, Boys and
Girls High School.
The Master of Ceremony duties will be handled by
Dean Meminger, Jr.
of NY 1 News; actress/producer Sheila Frazier
will serve as hostess. Included in the program
will be a special tribute to Sports Foundation
co-founder Bob William and a keynote address by
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
Entertainment for the evening will be provided
by Ray, Goodman & Brown.
Past honorees have included the National Urban
League President, Marc Morial; NFL Executive VP,
Harold Henderson; Rev. Floyd Flake, Allen
African Methodist Episcopal Church, NHL pioneer,
Willie O’Ree, MLB executive, Wendy Lewis, and
activist Rev. Herb Daughtry, to name a few. More
than 400 guests and supporters are expected to
attend the gala fundraiser that will also
feature a silent auction.
“This is the 20th annual dinner, but to
celebrate 40 years for the Foundation makes this
year that much more special for everyone
involved. It is going to be an emotional, but
fun, evening,” said foundation president Vaughn
Thomas.
Proceeds from the dinner benefit The Sports
Foundation and the Robert A. Williams
Scholarship Fund. SFI, located in the South
Bronx, is a not-for-profit 501 C(3) community
based corporation. Established in 1969 as a
model youth organization that utilizes
counseling, sports, health and education program
participation as a vehicle to foster youth
involvement in anti-substance abuse, cultural
and positive alternative activities.
