19th ANNUAL SPORTS FOUNDATION
SALUTES OLYMPIAN JOHN CARLOS, BILL WHITE;
SFI PROVIDES COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS
The 19th Annual Sports Foundation Gala Awards
Dinner on June 12 at the Villa Barone Manor,
Bronx, NY, was a mega-event that saluted sports
greats of the past and supported students with a
bright future.
Besides 1968 Olympian Carlos and former Major
League Baseball National League President White;
awards also went to Howie Evans of the Amsterdam
News; Rev. Charles Coverdale of First Baptist
Church of Riverhead; educator Cecil Sievers;
Madelyn Lugo of the National Puerto Rican Day
Parade; and the New York City Mission Society.
Proceeds from the dinner benefit The Sports
Foundation, located in the South Bronx, is a
not-for-profit 501 C(3) community based
corporation established in 1969 as a model youth
organization that utilizes sports, leadership
and program participation as a vehicle to foster
youth involvement in anti-substance abuse
educational, cultural and positive alternative
activities.
As a result of the dinner, the Foundation was
able to award scholarships to eight high school
students who are headed to college. They
